Inspiring Stories of Extraordinary Young People

Good morning respected friends and organizers,
It is an honour for me to be to be here today and talk to all of you, leaders, youth and other important members of our society who are actively working toward a lasting peace.
I strongly hope that with our work during these days, we will be able to create a new global youth network driven by a passion for peace and service to others.
I'm Brenda Torres Garcia from Colombia, South America. I am 17 years old.
Colombia is a beautiful, diverse and welcoming country. Despite this, we still suffer from a 50 year-long armed conflict between government forces, guerrillas and paramilitary groups. This has resulted in more than 6,000,000 casualties, almost the entire population of Jordan. After so many years of war, peace talks are being conducted between the Colombian government and the world's oldest guerrilla, The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Las FARC). This is a welcoming step on the road to peace, but we must continue our efforts, because lasting peace will only be achieved with the empowerment of youth.
I live in the city of Armenia, in a neighbourhood affected by several socioeconomic issues and different types of violence. There are good people living there who are working hard to support their families, but at the same time, the lack of economic and educational opportunities, poverty, displaced populations who reached our neighbourhoods after losing their lands and families due to the armed conflict, drug proliferation, crime and domestic violence are negatively influencing the development and training of children, adolescents and youth.
My commitment within the National Movement of Children, Adolescents and Youth Peacebuilders is to help these children and youth to overcome these traumas, forgive others, develop resilience and hope, develop alternative ways to transform conflicts and help others through their experience, work and commitment to peace. I work with children and youth, encouraging them to be positive actors and protagonists in peacebuilding as well as to understand the value and effect of a sustainable peace in our lives. Peace or the lack of it dramatically impact our rights.
We are a movement led by girls, boys, adolescents and youth who believe in peace and work for it. We count with the participation of nearly 10.000 children and youth in different cities of the country. We work through peer mentoring and use it as a pedagogic tool to develop knowledge and skills related to peace and reconciliation at the individual, family, community and social levels.
I am a mentor of a mentoring group. I involved myself in the Movement at the age of seven and started as a member of the seed group of peacebuilders. I became a mentor for other children and then became a member of the local council. I am now a delegate in the national council, the body that coordinates the Movement.
I consider myself as a peacebuilder because I have been able to look into my own life and the life of others to become aware that when you manage to be really committed to peace in all aspects of your life, you can change many things around you, in your family and even in your community.
We are here as young people to share with our leader how violence put in danger our lives and negatively affects our future. We are united here to work together, to find ways toward peace so that our generation and the coming ones can be less affected by those who put in danger our freedom and ability to transform our world in a safer place.
I am here today to remind you that violence in my country has hindered educational, economic and social opportunities of several generations. But this does not have to continue this way.
It means for us that we need to have the opportunity to make our voices heard and that our demands need to be met and implemented in order to improve our work. As youth it is important to feel that we are part of something; and that this ‘something’ helps us finding a meaning in our lives as well as transcend.
Today I am calling for:
- Global leaders, to be more committed to peace, to reject violence and to seek fairness and justice through laws and public policies, to improve social investment in education, health and recreation and protection of children and youth from harm and violence.
- To the developed countries, to be an example of peace and respect, and at the same time to support and financing children and young people’s peacebuilding initiatives and believe in them.
- To the communities around the world: to be more respectful of others, especially children and youth, and to reject violence based on beliefs, thought, religion and/or gender.
- To the peacebuilding initiatives of children and youth: to be strong, to fully develop their potential and their ideas, work with other initiatives around the world, and become stronger with our messages of love, respect, peace and tolerance for differences. Dear youth, we are the future leaders of this world; we must raise our voices through peaceful efforts and with facts. We must invite people to support our efforts and believe in our potential to create a new generation of peace. We must believe in the power of our voices and actions for change and social transformation.
As youth, we have enough vitality and sensitivity, to be messengers in our society about the need for social justice, equity and respect for others. We are the present and the future and we must take care of the world we live in. We should work together to contribute to the transformation of our present and future world, with commitment, peace, love and respect to our flags.
All my gratitude to the Government of Jordan for hosting this Global Forum on Youth, Peace and Security.
I thank God, my family and the organizers of this event for giving me the opportunity to speak aloud for peace and the role that we, young people play.

Es un honor para mí estar ante ustedes, líderes, jóvenes y otros miembros importantes de nuestra sociedad que están trabajando activamente hacia una paz duradera.
Espero firmemente que con nuestro trabajo durante estos días, podamos crear una nueva red mundial de jóvenes conectada por su pasión por la paz y el servicio a los demás.
Soy Brenda Torres García, de Colombia en América del Sur. Tengo 17 años.
A pesar de lo hermoso y diverso que es mi país, somos un país con más de cincuenta años de guerra entre las fuerzas del gobierno, la guerrilla y los grupos paramilitares. Esto ha dejado más de 6.000.000 de víctimas, entre ellos niños y jóvenes, una cantidad de víctima casi igual a la población de Jordania. Después de tantos años de guerra, se están llevando a cabo conversaciones de paz entre el gobierno colombiano y la guerrilla más antigua del mundo, Las Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Las FARC). Este es un paso positivo en el camino hacia la paz, pero tenemos que seguir trabajando porque la paz duradera, sólo se logrará con el empoderamiento de los jóvenes apoyando a sus comunidades.
El barrio donde vivo, en la ciudad de Armenia en Colombia, tiene fuertes vulnerabilidades, hay buenas personas que viven allí que están trabajando duro para mantener a sus familias, pero al mismo tiempo, existe falta de oportunidades económicas y educativas, pobreza, drogas, crimen organizado, violencia doméstica, población desplazada que llega a nuestro barrio después de haber perdido sus tierras y familiares por la violencia armada, creando escenarios con influencias negativas en el desarrollo y la formación de los niños y adolescentes.
Mi compromiso a través del trabajo que hago con el Movimiento de Gestores de paz, es ayudarles a superar sus traumas, perdonar a otros, desarrollar resiliencia, esperanza, nuevas formas de transformar los conflictos y ayudar a otros y otra a través de su experiencia y trabajo comprometido con la paz. Trabajo con niños, niñas y jóvenes, alentándoles para que seamos actores positivos y protagonistas en la construcción de paz y a entender el valor que una paz duradera tiene en nuestras vidas, pues la paz o la falta de ella impactan nuestros demás derechos.
Somos un movimiento coordinado por niños, niñas, adolescentes y jóvenes que creemos en la paz y trabajamos por ello. Contamos con la participación de cerca de 10 mil niños, niñas, adolescentes y jóvenes en diferentes ciudades del país y trabajamos a través del mentoreo entre pares como herramienta pedagógica para el desarrollo de conocimientos y habilidades en relación con la paz y la reconciliación a nivel personal, familiar, comunitario y social.
Yo soy mentora de un grupo de mentores, ingresé al Movimiento cuando tenía siete años y empecé como parte del grupo de semilleros de gestores de paz, luego fui mentora de un grupo de niños, más tarde fui miembro de la junta local y actualmente sirvo como delegada en la junta nacional que coordina el Movimiento.
Soy gestora de paz, porque he podido ver en mi propia vida y en la vida otros con los que he trabajo, que cuando se logra establecer un compromiso real con la paz en todos los ámbitos de tu vida, puedes lograr que muchas cosas cambien a tu alrededor, tu familia, incluso tu comunidad.
Estamos aquí como jóvenes, para compartir con nuestros líderes cómo la violencia pone en peligro nuestros medios de vida e inhibe nuestro futuro. Nos hemos reunido en este espacio para trabajar juntos, para encontrar caminos para la paz para que mi generación y las posteriores a mí sean menos afectadas por aquellos que tratan de coartar nuestra libertad y capacidad de hacer de nuestro mundo un lugar más seguro.
Me presento ante ustedes para recordarles que la violencia en mi país ha coartado las oportunidades educativas, económicas y sociales de varias generaciones, pero que esto no tiene que seguir siendo así.
Esto significa para nosotros como jóvenes, que necesitamos tener la oportunidad hacer escuchar nuestras voces y que nuestras demandas se implementen para que podamos trascender el actual estado de las circunstancias con nuestro trabajo. Como jóvenes es importante sentirnos parte de algo, encontrar sentido de vida en ello y poder trascender a partir de lo que hacemos.
Hoy estoy llamando a:
- El liderazgo global, para ser más comprometidos con la paz, rechazar la violencia y buscar la equidad y la justicia a través de leyes, políticas públicas, mejoramiento de la inversión social en educación, salud y recreación y protección de los niños y jóvenes de todo daño y violencia.
- Los países desarrollados, a ser un ejemplo de paz y respeto, al mismo tiempo apoyar y financiar las iniciativas de paz de los niños, niñas, adolescentes y jóvenes y creer en nosotros.
- Las comunidades de todo el mundo a ser más respetuoso con los demás, especialmente los niños, niñas y jóvenes, y a rechazar la violencia basada en creencias, pensamiento, religión o género.
- Las iniciativas de paz de los niños, niñas y jóvenes a ser fuertes, desarrollar plenamente nuestro potencial e ideas, trabajar con otras iniciativas en todo el mundo, y ser cada vez más fuerte con nuestro mensaje de amor, respeto, paz y tolerancia a las diferencias.
Queridos jóvenes, somos los futuros líderes de este mundo; debemos levantar nuestras voces a través del esfuerzo colectivo pacífico, basado en hechos e invitar a la gente a apoyarnos y creer en nuestro potencial para crear una nueva generación de paz.
Como jóvenes, tenemos suficiente vitalidad y sensibilidad, para ser mensajeros de la sociedad acerca de la necesidad de justicia social, equidad y respeto a los demás. Somos el presente y el futuro y tenemos que cuidar el mundo en que vivimos, con compromiso, paz, amor y respeto como nuestras banderas.
Toda mi gratitud al Gobierno de Jordania y a los organizadores de este evento por acoger este Foro Mundial de Juventud, Paz y Seguridad y darnos la oportunidad de hablar en voz alta por la paz y el papel que tenemos como jóvenes en ello.
